No Masterpiece, But It May Be The Most Fun Movie Ever Made.

I admit, I had doubts when I saw Raimi's Army of Darkness enter the DVD market in flying colors. I remember seeing it years ago: Bruce Campbell with one-liners coolly rolling off of his tongue, really evil scary guys getting mutilated in every which way, crazy camera-work... I had a lot of fun. However, it had been a long time since I had seen it, and I doubted my opinion from days past. I waited on it, and I checked back at Amazon, seeing that the Limited Edition had ended production. Realizing that I could not live without it securely in my collection, I scurried off to the video store that weekend and bought one of the two copies left on the shelves. I watched it that evening, and, albeit some newly-realized problems, I really enjoyed it a lot. The on-set jokes that previously were the film's downfall are nicely explained and laughed at in the audio commentary as well as the documentary. I should have probably put 4 Stars, but, what the heck, its fun. Buy the Limited Edition if you can, because it is a great DVD.

Army of Darkness is even better than it predecessors

I had a hard time deciding whether or not I wanted to watch Army of Darkness. I saw commercials around 1993 during the time of its theatrical release and it looked silly but funny. But it faded from theaters fast after an obscure box office performance. This convinced me that the film lost box office steam because of bad word of mouth, but then I found out that Army of Darkness had some of the highest tape and DVD sales in horror film history (even higher than the previous Evil Dead films) and it convinced me to buy the film. I wasn't disappointed, not in the least bit.
Despite it's mere 81 minute running time, this film provides more laughs than almost any other longer movie. It's silly and nonsensical and all this definitely helps. Bruce Campbell's performance doesn't hurt, either. I've read many reviews below complaining that Army of Darkness didn't have enough gore, but believe me, adding gore in this film would have been too distracting from its already dark enough humor.

AOD Director's Cut isn't as bad as it's made out to be.

Having been a diehard Evil Dead/AOD fan (I saw Evil Dead in the movie theaters as a kid), I was willing to fork over for the Director's Cut when I recently bought a DVD player. I didn't have the theatrical version on DVD, but I did have a VHS copy. I do have both versions now.
The quality problems just don't seem that obvious to me. Didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie at all. The Director's Cut contains 15 minutes of extra footage, but doesn't state where they are (mostly the windmill scene). My only real complaints with the movie are:
1) Does not contain the S-Mart ending. Considering the Theatrical version contains the alternate ending, this was a real blunder. It's a DVD, guys, there's plenty of room for that stuff, and I expect a limited-edition Director's Cut to contain lots of goodies.
2) Doesn't make it easy to find out where the 'new' footage is. I'm an AOD fan, but I do have a full-time job, and simply can't afford to sit there and memorize the movie backwards and forwards.
That said -- I was happy with it. I do have some questions as to why Raimi made the changes that he did for the Director's Cut version. (The windmill scene could've been cut for length, I can buy that. But why, why, why, would he change out 'Good...bad...I'm the guy with the gun' for a throwaway line like "I ain't that good" in the director's cut? The line in the theatrical version is much more memorable and cooler. I thought the special effects featurette was cool as well.
