Not Forbidden, not great either

This 1995 album was the last(at the time of writing) studio recording released by Black Sabbath. The lineup features ever-present guitarist Tony Iommi; for this album his henchmen are singer Tony Martin, bassist Neil Murray and the late Cozy Powell on drums. Long time keyboard Player Geoff Nichols is also present.
This album has been claimed by many to be Sabbath's worst offering, but it really is a matter of taste. Some people certainly did like it, but those who hated it really did hate it indeed.
The first track is "Illusion of Power", a heavy, dark song about insanity and isolation. It also features a powerful section from guest vocalist Ice T. This song is an excellent opener. The second track is "Get a Grip", a faster song, but with the same dark, cynical lyrics. Next is "Can't Get Close Enough". This song is another nasty social commentary, featuring some nicely subdued singing from Martin. Of course, it builds into quite a heavy song, but the Change is not Extreme and is quite effective. After that, "Shaking Off the Chains" is another good song, combining one of Iommi's usual dark riffs with some varied singing from Martin. Like all of these first four songs, the lyrics here are original and meaningful and the instrument work darkly ominous.
These opening four songs make you feel that this is a great album... but it is all downhill from there. Songs like "I Won't Cry for You" and "Rusty Angels" lack impact and substance. After four tracks of this nature, some of which are terribly cheesey, you may be tempted to switch this album off. But stick around for the last song, "Forbidden". It is a tidy song with a fine chorus, and is a good finish to the album. It's a terrible shame that the middle tracks on this album were so disappointing; it really killed Forbidden for me.
If you are a fan of Tony Martin's work with Sabbath, this album is a must have. The same if you are a completist. However, if you think that Ozzy was the only good Sabbath singer, or if you are looking for an introduction to Black Sabbath, then this one is not for you.

Sabbath's final studio outing

This came out in 1995 and would sadly be the final studio album Black Sabbath apparently will ever release. At least they came up with their finest album since 1990's epic masterpiece "TYR"--this featuring the same lineup of Tony Martin on vocals, the late great Cozy Powell on drums, Geoff Nichols on the keyboards, Neil Murray on bass and of course Tony Iommi on guitar. Although many would argue, I think this was the band's very best lineup. And the songs on "Forbidden" are classic Sabbath, especially 'Can't Get Close Enough', 'Get A Grip', 'Rusty Angels', 'I Won't Cry For You' and 'Guilty As Hell'. The cd has a Live feel, as it was recorded basically Live in the studio--so forget any gloss. "Forbidden" is raw and primal, and actually is a return of sorts to the early '70's sound. Play 'Shaking Off The Chains' next to, say, 'Cornucopia' and you'll get what I mean. The worst part of Sabbath's subsequent reunion of the original lineup (apart from lousy concerts and two dreadful new songs) is the fact that their very greatest singer/frontman, Tony Martin, won't be with Black Sabbath in the future. "Forbidden" is a great cd, and at this ridiculously low reissue price, one that every Sabbath fan must own. ....A brilliant end to a brilliant recording career.

Sabbath: Shaking off the chains!

After A disappointing offering of Cross Purposes Iommi,Martin, and Powell come back to give a very enjoyable music experience in Forbidden. With bassist Neil Murray and long time Sab keyboard Geoff Nicholls adding to the mix. Track 1 : Illusion of Power, Features Ice T In the middle during a thundering rhythem. Slick production and awesome sound are featured on this CD.Tracks 2 and 3: Get a Grip and Can't Get Close Enough are album staples. Track 4: Shaking off the Chains sounds like Sabbath of old. Starting with an eerie upbeat rythem and heading into a dynamic Iommi guitar feast. Track 5: I Wont Cry for You is an excellent ballad. This song has alot of Heart and should have been a mega hit, If not for all the "it doesn't sound like Ozzy" naysayers. Iommis Guitar solo in this song goes right into the pit of your stomach. Tasty chops. Tracks 6,7,8:Guilty as Hell, Sick and Tired, Rusty Angels are good heavy metal songs. Track 9: Forbidden, I was waiting for the title song to break out, but it just didnt deliver the jams. Although still decent with interesting lyrics. Track 10: Kiss of Death. Finally Cozy starts pounding those skins he's so famous for. The best song of the cd Kiss of Death delivers and then some! With enchanted slow guitars turning into evil thundering riffs and mega drums this song should please any Heavy metal enthusiest. Martins vocals are at his best with Kiss of Death. Play it loud and over and over. Overall this is an excellent heavy metal album with the Godfather of heavy metal/doom/goth In Tony Iommi and legendary drummer Cozy Powell.
