Maradona Vs. Elvis - Guernica - Good To Know That If I Ever Need Attention All I Have To Do Is Die - Play Crack The Sky Brand New Sound....Wow I can't say enough about this album. I have never heard a single CD with more voice in my life. The lyrics are to die for...there are dozens of lines that will ring through my head for a while to come. I really do Love how Jesse doesn't hold back his feelings...I really do feel bad for whoever he sings about. As for the music, it's incredible. I honestly can't even compare it to anything. Their soft guitar is beautiful, like in "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot", my personal favorite. There are no incredible guitar riffs, just amazing music. The guitars blend together wonderfully to create melodies that do not need complex guitar work. The bass work is also fantastic, such as in the songs "Sic Transit Gloria" and my other favorite, "Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't", which is an incredible song with powerful drums and bass, and emotional lyrics that speak the mind of Jesse and the band. Obviously, If you are expecting and hoping another "Your Favorite Weapon", you're not going to get it, but you will be pleasantly surprised. This is just amazing music. I could sit down and listen to this over and over for hours and repeat the words to myself, humming along to the catchier tunes such as "The Quiet Things That No One Knows", and listening carefully to the experimental tunes like "Good To Know That If I Ever Need Attention, All I Have To Do is Die". Even the titles are awesome. What an incredible CD..buy it now. Incredible I was a huge fan of Your Favorite Weapon and had been awaiting the release of Deja Entendu for quite some time. I was shocked when, leaving the Best Buy parking lot, I put the new cd in my car cd Player and scanned the first 9 seconds of each song. I had to grab the case to look and make sure it did indeed say Brand New on it (it did) because what I was hearing sounded hardly anything like The Band I had come to know through Y.F.W. Brand New have changed, and very much for the better in my opinion. They've gone from the catchy, energetic pop-punk sound of Y.F.W. to a full-fledged emo sound through the amazingly original work of art that Deja Entendu is:
1. Tautou- a lulling introduction to the Journey ahead
2. Sic Transit- pumping, groovy verses and a hard-rock chorus
3. I Will Play- mostly acoustic; mysterious
4. Okay I Believe You- great lyrics, kicks in half way
5. The Quiet Things- the only song that could have been on Y.F.W.
6. The Boy- mostly acoutic, a classic emo sound
7. Jaws Theme- sometimes jazz; sometimes rock
8. Me vs.- slow, pretty; distortion later
9. Guernica- Various instrumental sounds, clever lyrics
10. Good To Know- kinda psychedelic at times
11. Play Crack- acoustic, unique vocal style
If you're a person who would consider the slower tempos and minimal distortion of Deja Entendu to be a watered down version of Brand New, then this cd is not for you, but if you want something honest, original, and musically incredible, despite the fact that Brand New is not the same, then go get this cd right away. For the most part, a Strong followup Brand New's sophomore release Leaves a Strong impression and shows this Band will probably have more longevity than many of the new and up and coming rock bands. More memorable melodies than the debut Your Favorite Weapon, with much more mature songwriting and well written lyrics that Focus on subjects other than just girls. 1. Tatou- A soft, simple guitar line leads to beautiful whispery-like vocals and has an organic, raw feel. Sets the tone for the rest of the album. 8/10 2. Sic Transit Gloria- A great bass line leads a killer verse with very nice, original vocals. The chorus takes a little away from an otherwise great song. Great bridge too. 7/10 3. I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light - An ordinary acoutic guitar leads into a somewhat boring song. Nothing too memorable about this one though it does show maturity. 5/10 4. Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't- Starts out simple with just a muted guitar and vocals. But keep listening... after the first chorus the verse really takes off with some amazing vocals and nice bass. 7/10 5. The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows- A soft undistorted electric leads to a riff that would fit nicely on the debut. It all leads into a great verse that sounds like something Alkaline Trio would write and then a killer chorus. Such an amazing bridge too; just unpretentious emotion. 8/10 6. The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot- Another acoustic song. Much better than the last but not quite as good as the closer acoustic track. Some Smiths influence on this one. 6/10 7. Jaws Theme Swimming- A solid tune with a cool intro riff and good vocals. 6/10 8. Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis- Hands down, the best song on the cd. Strong, emotional lyrics and vocals with an amazingly haunting melody. So simple yet effective. And it all ends with a powerful bridge that could leave the listener in tears. 9/10 9. Guernica- Kind of resembles that Youth Of The Nation song by P.O.D. A somewhat filler track. 5/10 10. Good to Know That If I Ever Need Attention..- A nice mellow tune with nice soothing vocals. A forgettable chorus though. 6/10 11. Play Crack The Sky- A nice closer with soft acoustic strumming and vocals that actually sound similar to Counting Crows. Another song that really shows this Band maturing. 7/10 Buy Brand New Deja Entendu at Amazon.com Buy posters at Allposters.comJamster - the latest ringtones for your phone! |
