Clueless | Year: 1995 Classification: Comedy Directed: - Amy Heckerling Actors/Actresses: - Paul Rudd - Alicia Silverstone as Cher - Jeremy Sisto - Brittany Murphy - Stacey Dash "This Movie Is, Like, You Know, Pretty Cute...." Nobody expected much from this little teen comedy about rich girls in Beverly Hills when it was released back in 1995. The film, which is loosely based on Jane Austen's "Emma", is about rich girl Cher(wonderfully played by Alicia Silverstone)who sets out to help relationships in her friends' lives and whoever else. The reason is to hide the fact that she herself is lonely. She doesn't have that special someone. The film was stylishly and sharply directed by veteran director Amy Heckerling. She also did "National Lampoon's European Vacation", "Fast Times At Ridgemont High", and "Look Who's Talking". The writing is quick, hip, clever, sharp, and funny. The young actors are all very good and deliver the lines the way they should be delivered. A good cast of young actors. Brittany Murphy, as the fashion victim Silverstone makes over, is a real stand out. Veteran character actor Dan Hedaya plays Alicia's gruff, but well meaning, father. The movie is very colorful. The actors seemed to really take hold of their roles and just have fun with it. It really comes across on screen. The movie makes fun of all the sayings and style of the time, but it's never vulgar or in your face. It plays it with sweet charm. A running joke through the film is that characters are named after music stars. Cher, Dionne, Elton. You get the picture. Stacey Dash, as Dionne, is a real find. Talk about gorgeous!. The movie turned into a surprise hit, both critical and box office wise. It spawned a pretty forgettable T.V. series. Nice movie. Get Clued In "As if! What-ever!" Well, if you missed 1995's hit comedy Clueless directed and written by Amy Heckerling then you missed the source of these trendy new catch phrases. Clueless is a light-hearted movie about teenagers, love, and growing up. The story itself is based on the nineteenth century Jane Austen novel Emma with a modern 1990s twist. Alicia Silverstone stars as Clueless' main character, Cher, who resembles Austen's Emma. Cher's teenage angst in her Beverly Hills life include what to wear to school each day, shopping at the mall, learning to drive her new jeep, and matchmaking. However, Cher's "one true thrill in life is a makeover." Cher is constantly surrounded by her socialites and drooling high school boys, none of which can even come close to being an acceptable match for her. Cher is no angel but remains quite lovable throughout the movie. Cher's manipulative skills help her to weasel into getting higher grades from the pushover teachers; and although she is not the brightest babe in Beverly Hills her charm and originality help make those "poorly researched speeches" interesting. When Cher's true thrill in life moves to town in the shape of an "ensembly challenged" girl named Tai and Cher begins to provide her with a complete makeover. When Cher's perfect world starts to get flipped upside down-she falls for the wrong guy, loses her position as most popular girl in school, and fails her driver's test Cher decides she is the one who is in need of the makeover. As Cher begins to make over her soul and searches for true happiness she begins to grow up and mature in the process. True happiness can't be found at the mall and through her journey Cher realizes what she truly wants in life. Backed up by Stacey Dash who plays Cher's best friend Dionne, Brittany Murphy who plays the ever-changing Tai, and Paul Rudd as the sarcastic yet sweet and oh so cute Josh the cast blends well together to create a fun-loving teen flick. Not just for teens though, one can look much further into Clueless to find deeper meaning and see the underlying satire in the story. Though most teenager do not live in Beverly Hills and live Cher's type of lifestyle, Clueless deals with some real adolescence issues including self-esteem, self-awareness, the search for knowledge, finding true friendships and love, and maturing into adulthood. For those of you who haven't seen both Clueless and Emma I would recommend seeing both. Have fun comparing and contrasting the two stories and finding which characters are intended to represent each other in Emma and Clueless. If you've seen Emma and not Clueless or vice versa try watching them both one right after the other and make an evening of it. The novel Emma by Jane Austen is still widely read and Clueless was followed up by a television show by the same name, which continues to play on the UPN Network. The moral of the stories continues to live on and so will the stories themselves. Clueless... uhhh What can I say about this movie? It's like any other teenage movie, about teenagers in high school trying to meet cute guys and stuff. Same old thing! I used to not like it at the beginning, but now I sorta like it, it's alright. I got it as a present for my 8th grade birthday party, I didn't even know that movie until I got it. So anyways, I think you should buy this movie even if you dont like teenager movies, youll like this one!
