a work of art!

What a fantastic film! As dark as it may be, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillipe (hottie!), and Selma Blair are phenomenal in this twisted...well, I'm not sure what you'd call it. It's pretty funny in the beginning, but gets thrilling in the end.
The only bad thing about this movie would have to be it's ending. First a crucial character is...erm...well something bad happens to them, and then Sebastian gets revenge on Catherine. Then it just ends. I mean, you never see what happened to Catherine or Annette! You find out what happens to Sebastian, but not to the two (or three, if you include Ceccile (Selma Blair) female characters.
Just don't let young children see this movie, because I think that it gives a message saying "Doing it is okay, it's all fun and games." Although the two evil characters do get revenge in the end.
An added bonus of this movie would be a scene in which you see Ryan Phillipe's butt.
Phillipe and Witherspoon have fantastic chemistry together, which would make sense seeing as they are now married and are expecting their second child. But everyone plays their characters well. Catherine is pure evil, Sebastian is also evil at first but softens, Annette is good-girl, and Ceccile is seriously naive and innocent.
A great buy - purchase this movie!

"Cruel Intentions" isn't as cruel as the title suggests...

"Cruel Intentions" is without a doubt one of the best movies of 1999. The characters of Sebastian and Kathryn are very sexy and manipulative, and it seems that throughout the movie they have everyone in their circle of friends and foes on very short leashes. The story is simple: In an attempt of soiling, (yes I wrote 'soiling') the reputation of her ex boyfriend's new steady, (Blair), Kathryn, (Gellar), calls upon her sex driven step brother Sebastian, (Phillipe) to seduce her, thus tainting her name. However Sebastian has grown weary of sleeping with the same type of women, and opts for a challenge: seducing the new headmaster's virgin daughter Annette, (Witherspoon). Kathryn makes a bet with him, telling him he has no chance of success. If he succeeds, he can sleep with her, if he loses, she gets his car. Deciding to take his sister up on her bet he seeks out Annette, and just for fun, he does what he sister asks of Cecile. The one thing that really stands out in this movie is the soundtrack, it's awesome. Perfect songs at the perfect time, helping set the scene's mood. The supporting characters are very good too. Joshua Jackson as Blaine is almost as cunning as Sebastian in his scenes, and the pure innocence of Selma Blair's Cecile is cute. The subtle humor in the movie also makes it a winner. A movie definately worth buying.

It's a bittersweet symphony I'll listen to again

For all those teens who have wanted to see it, beware. If a female kissing a female repulses you, the fast forward button is probably your friend (although most teenage guys won't find ANYTHING wrong with some lady-lady action). For all those adults with the raised eyebrows, okay you have reason. But there's more to this movie than just the sex premise it suggests. What's behind all that is a great lesson. Although most people don't see it at first, at the core this movie is showing us that being evil and taking advantage of people isn't going to get you anywhere. The premise is that a spoiled little rich kid (played by Ryan Phillippee? I don't think I spelled that right) makes a bet with his beautiful and downright evil stepsister addicted to coke (played by a convincing Sarah Michelle Gellar, with red hair no less). If he can't deflower proud virgin Annette Hargrove (played by Reese Witherspoon in her most suprising and well acted role), the headmaster's new daughter, she gets his car. If he can, he gets her, in bed. There's more to this twisted and twisting story, but that's the story at the core. Of course all the other parts play important roles in this, but I won't give that away. Forget the critics for a moment. There's some pretty good acting for a movie dubbed for 'only teens'. And the story was very well written. Maybe it shouldn't have toted itself as a teen 'Dangerous Liasons' and it wouldn't have gotten half the critisism. Since most teens haven't seen 'Liasons', then this movie should be a good rent. So for all those who have wanted to see it, rent it. At least then you'll get to decide if you like it or not. But I enjoy watching it, not only because of the good acting, and great plot twists, but because it teaches a good lesson. Even though it tries to cover it up.

Prep School - high school agnst with money

With the title Cruel Intentions one might expect a darker, edgier movie this is light fare and almost comic at times.BR>Poor little rich girl Kathryn does everything she can to keep her boyfriend sexually satisfied then is dumped for the virgin Cecile. Kathryns' response is to enlist the help of her step-brother Sebastian to relieve Cecile of her virginity.BR>Sebastian is interested in relieving the new head masters' daughter, Annette, of her virginity before school resumes in the fall. Kathryn and Sebastian place a bet on the outcome of this endeavor; Annette remains a virgin and Sebastian loses his car to Kathryn, Annette loses her virginity and Kathryn has sex with Sebastian a hitherto unattainable goal.BR>The usual negative aspect of having twenty somethings (Sarah Michelle Gellar/22 as Kathryn Merteuil, Matthew Ryan Phillippe/25 as Sebastian Valmont, Reese Witherspoon/23 as Annette Hargrove, Selma Blair/27 as Cecile Caldwell) playing high schoolers shows up.BR>This film does not live up to its' potential, 3 stars for the effort put in by the actors.BR>Trivia, Matthew Ryan Phillippe and his wife Reese Witherspoon became parents of a girl September of '99 the year the film was released. Selma Blair auditioned for the television role of Buffy the Vampire Slayer the part went to Sarah Michelle Gellar.
