Disney's The Kid | Year: 2000 Classification: Comedy Directed: - Jon Turteltaub Actors/Actresses: - Bruce Willis No Kidding "The Kid" starring Bruce Willis is a mildly enjoyable movie. While it isn't a bad film, there are plenty of problems with it that distract from the story. It has it's share of good laughs, but with an equal amount of misses. The story centers around Bruce Willis's character, Russ Duritz, a high-strung, obnoxiously opinionated "Image Consultant". When Russ begins to unravel, in steps Rusty (played by Spencer Breslin)-aka The Kid. Rusty turns out to be the 8 year old version of Russ. There are no explanations as to why and how Rusty shows up, he just suddenly appears. Spencer Breslin's characterization of Rusty is fair at best. While Breslin displays genuine vulnerability, his acting is too forced in many scenes to be believable. In one scene while driving with Willis, Breslin's Rusty begins to cry. The acting in this scene is unbearably bad. There are a few other scenes where Breslin seems like he's on his 53rd take and seems too rehearsed to be genuine. Another problem with casting Breslin as Rusty is that Willis' eyes are brown, but Breslin's are sparkling blue. How did Russ's eye color change in 30 years? We never find out, nor are there any attempts to explain it. It's another distraction that tests the viewers already suspended sense of disbelief. While there are obvious short comings in this film, it does make good family fare. Children will enjoy this one if they're 8 or older, but most of the humor will be lost on younger children. There are some laughs for adults too. The supporting cast is excellent and hold the movie together. Lily Tomlin is flawless playing Willis's assistant and Emily Mortimer plays Willis's love interest with gawky charm. "The Kid" should appeal to Willis fans, but I'd recommend renting it before you buy. Bruce Willis plus Cute Little Boy equals Box Office Gold. The Above formula is a Proven one ("The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable"), and "The Kid" only makes it Stronger. Being such a HUGE Bruce Willis fan, I was a Little hesitant about seeing him in such an Outright Kids movie, but after watching about 5 minutes, I knew I was in for something Great. It is Original, Witty, Clever and Not too Sickly Sweet like a lot of these films can be, and most importantly it's Funny for all Ages. The Magic of Disney films is in Full Throttle as Bruce has Somehow come into contact with Himself, at about age 8. The film follows Bruce's attempts to find out why his younger self is Here, and How to get him Back. Bruce Willis gives a Comedic Performance that puts Professional Comedians to Shame. He made me Laugh, Cry, Cheer and Applaud. Spencer Breslan plays the Little Bruce and he is Wonderful. Many child actors tend to get on my Nerves, but this kid Never does. He is Terrific. Emily Mortimer is Equally Likeable as Bruce's "Sort Of" Girlfriend. She has an Innocence and Youthfulness that makes her Relationship with Spencer All the more Realistic and Honest. "The Kid" is one of Disney's Best Live-Action films Ever. I'd recommend it to Everyone. Kids, Teens, Adults... Everyone should find Something to like about the film, I Loved Everything about it. Sorry but I can't agree This story has been done dozens of times over the centuries -- the hardened, cynical adult looks back over their life and has an epiphany. Stories like this and Dicken's "Christmas Carol" seem to me to drag the audience through a lot only to get them to an ending which we all know -- bad guy turns good. I much prefer the twist versions of the story, like "Harold and Maude" and "It's A Wonderful Life", wherein the protagonist is a more likeable character who comes to see how much they are liked and valued by others in the world. Saw this on a plane and I'm sure that hurt it a little but honestly I hated this movie.
