Edward Scissorhands | Year: 12071990 Classification: Fantasy Country: USA Language: English Directed: - Tim Burton Actors/Actresses: - Johnny Depp - Winona Ryder Tim Burton's finest hour This tenth anniversary edition is sure to be a superb addition to any DVD collection. All of Tim Burton's films are worth looking at, but the fairytale qualities and heartfelt emotion in this film make it close to his best, second only to "Ed Wood". A simple fable of a boy, Edward (Johnny Depp) whose inventor (Vincent Price, in a beautiful finale to his career) dies before completing him, leaving Edward with scissors for hands. Edward lives alone in the inventor's gothic mansion until Avon comes calling, and he is taken in my Dianne Weist's hilarious Avon lady. In surburbia, Edward finds love (Winona Ryder as the ultimate fairytale princess) as well as prejudice - Tim Burton is always making films about outsiders who just don't fit into society. The performances are great - Depp is a revalation - the production design and cinematography are breathtaking, and Danny Elfman's best ever score envelopes and enriches the entire film. Outstanding! Being Different... Director Tim Burton's fairy tale, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, is a fine example of just how creative a filmmaker he can be. High atop a mountain, an inventor's (Vincent Price) greatest creation called Edward (Johnny Depp), is left incomplete, after the inventor dies. The final touch would have been a set of "normal" hands. Instead, he is left with sharp metal shears, for hands. Edward is soon discovered by Peg Boggs, (Dianne Wiest) who wants Edward to leave his isolation, to live with her and her family, and to see what the "real" world has to offer. Upon his arrival, the stranger is loved by some, hated by others, and feared by most. As he tries to make sense of everything around him, he finds himself falling in love with Peg's daughter, Kim (Winona Ryder). Depp traded in his idol good looks to play Edward, and in the process, proved what a good actor he is. There is a real vulnerability to the character, that is conveyed, not through words, but expressions. The transformation is amazing. The rest of the cast freely emerses itself in this world and makes it come together. Burton's very unique production style also gives the film a fairy tale arua. After a bit, you don't really notice that slight "Other World " tilt, because you can totally buy into it all. The 10th Anniversary DVD offers 2 really good commentaries. The first one by Burton, is well done. You can tell that the film was a truly wonderful experience for him. Especially when he talks about working with his idol Vincent Price. The second is with composer Danny Elfman, about his collaboration with the director and the musical score that he created for the film. The featurette is pretty standard and has what you would expect from it. Rounding out the extras on the disc, are the original theatrical trailer, conceptual art that halped to bring this world to life, and a few television spots A solid DVD for an underated film. It's message of tolerence for those who are different is one that resonates...but never feels forced or gets heavy handed Recommended A KAYCEYGIRL VIDEO LIBRARY "MUST HAVE" !! Another genius production by Tim Burton!! As a huge fan of Time Burton AND Johnny Depp, it is my completely unbiased opinion that this is (perhaps) one of the most underrated Christmas Love stories of modern times!! But wait, you say, LOVE STORY?? How can that be?? Isn't this a Horror/Fantasy/Fairy Tale?? No Way!! Edward Scissorhands is definitely a love story!! It is the story of the love between a father and a son and a son and his father. It is the tale of love between a boy and girl...the classic forbidden love as in Romeo and Juliet. I can't believe it but I really must say that once again, I have to clap for Winona Ryder in this one (along with BeatleJuice). Johnny Depp also provides great character development without speech. And the dry humor is rampant throughout the film. And the IRONY!! Oh, the irony of it all. The pastel suburbia, the Avon lady, waterbeds, and Chevy vans. Topiary Gardens, sedans, and backyard BBQ's. Even the story of why it now snows in the old home town. I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! A KAYCEYGIRL VIDEO LIBRARY "MUST HAVE" !!
