Good 80's Bond movie, but DVD not the best in this series.

80's Bond films starring Roger Moore are infamous for their cheesiness, but For Your Eyes Only is perhaps the only one that deserves another look. It really surprised me that within this amiable, if slightly corny film, is a very solid story, with surprisingly strong characters, Bond included. Don't let the absolutely dreadful, silly, and entirely pointless pre-credit sequence put you off: the film gets better. MUCH better as it goes along, and it is an extremely rewarding film: the car chase involving a Citroen 2CV is one of the best car stunt sequences ever done, and the ski sequence, starting at the top of a ski-jump and ending inside, and on-top-of a barn, via a bobsled run, is one of the most spectacular stunt sequences ever committed to film. It lets up a bit thereafter, but unlike the newest Bond films, it is engaging and interesting even when things aren't exploding. The tight plot moves along very well, and there is quality written all over the production: it is beautifully photographed, the musical score by Bill Conti is a refreshing change from John Barry's great, if sometimes overly serious music, and that title theme performed by Sheena Easton is one of the series' best. The film delivers alomost to the very end, but the overly cheesy ending does let it down a bit. But unlike Moore's next two films, the cheesiness is at a minimum in FYEO, and is it ever an improvement on Moonraker's dreadful excesses.
The DVD, however, is not quite as feature-rich as most of the other DVD's in this series. It only has one main documentary on the making of the film, but it is disappointing in that it doesn't have the usual second doc that focusses on an aspect of Bond films, such as visual effects, stunts, design etc.
Overall, a decent DVD, but don't buy it until there is a re-issue of all the DVD's in the series, because it is not worth the greatly inflated price brought about by rarity value.

For Your Eyes Only

This Bond movie returned to the days of Ian Fleming.Kristatos makes an okay villain while Topol is great as Columbo.Carol Bouqet is good as Melina Havelock and Roger Moore is good too.Not too many good gadgets though. The car is not used. The ski chase was very good. Some other good action is a waterfont raid on a warehouse, a car chase, and an attack on Kristatos' mountaintop fortress. The keelhauling scene was well-filmed.The underwater scenes were beautiful.Sheena Easton's title song is okay as is Bill Conti's score. The Greek settings was nice. The plot was good. However,Richard Maibaum's script is weak. For Your Eyes Only is probably Moore's fifth best film, beaten by The Spy who Loved Me, Live and Let Die, A View To a Kill, and Octopussy.I do recommend For Your Eyes Only.

Roger Moore's Best Turn as 007

James Bond films can be divided into two camps. Some have over-the-top villains and larger-than-life plots, while others are down to earth, gritty spy adventures. "For Your Eyes Only" falls squarely in the latter camp. This characteristic has earned it praise from those who enjoy Bond movies with a more realistic air, while those who prefer the more fantastic deride it as boring.
For my own part, I find "For Your Eyes Only" to be the best Roger Moore film and indeed better than most of the Connery and Brosnan films as well. That is not to say the movie is without flaws. The "heavy" and the "henchman" are a somewhat underwhelming, the score is a little too pop, and Bond's flirtation with a young skater strains credulity. However, these minor complaints are overcome with thrilling chases, superb action, tight storytelling, beautiful locations, and intense suspense that is sorely lacking in most Bond films.
On the whole, "For Your Eyes Only" may not be what you expect, but it is one of the best of the series.
DVD: Thankfully, MGM gave this one the full 5.1 sound treatment. Unfortunately, the soundtrack has its jarring moments, especially in the rear channels during the pre-title sequence and when Bond gets caught at Gonzales' lair. The extra features are informative and fun, as has been the case with the other Bond films.
