| Frankenstein Description: Kenneth Branagh's "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" is truer to the tale than most movie versions, but while watching this oversized and stitched-together monstrosity one gains a newfound appreciation for bastardized Hollywood version starring Boris Karloff. Though far from Shelley's story, the original "Frankenstein" is a beautiful example of how to take a good book and simplify its parts for the screen. Branagh's "Frankenstein," on the other hand, throws everything in and even adds a few extra touches. The result is a three-headed, five-footed, nine-thumbed brute of a movie that takes its sensationalism too seriously while sensationalizing most of the serious elements of the novel. There are key differences between the novel and most movie versions, the obvious one being that the monster is not a cretin in the book, but a brilliant superhuman who, if awful to behold, has a giant and noble soul. This underscores Frankenstein's sin. Year: 1998 Classification: Horror
