Maybe my hopes were too high

When I heard G3 would feature the top 3 guitar legends of the 80s I was excited.BR>Maybe my hopes were too high but this DVD left me feeling a bit bland.BR>G3 may be Satriani and Vai's creation, but in this presentation Malmsteen stole the show. He played with more energy and excitement than the others. BR>The song selection for Satriani and Vai did not seem good. With the exception of Satch Boogie and Juice, this DVD did not show these fine players at their best.BR>Vai's opening piece was irritating to listen to and sounded like somebody experimenting with new ideas and sound effects live on stage.BR>The sound of Satriani's guitar was buzzy and not like his usual cool sound.BR>At the end of the DVD all 3 guitarists played together which should have been a historic event.BR>It was great to see but only Little Wing worked out well.BR>Rocking in the Free World demonstrated the mismatch between the different playing styles and Voodoo Child seemed disjointed.
I did not get the CD but a friend tells me the song selection and performances on the CD are actually better than the DVD.
Maybe after several G3 DVD and CD products the best Satriani and Vai songs have already been released several times and that is why on this DVD the song selections for these 2 seem weaker.
It is still worth seeing and worth owning as it is the best guitar performance you will see these days but it is not quite what you may have expected with these 3 guitar legends side by side.
To see these guys at their best you would need to buy their respective solo concert DVDs.

3 headed monster

Ever since this DVD was announced, I coundnt wait to see and hear the end result. To me its like putting ketchup, raw fish and beer into a blender and expect something very tasty to come out of it. Fortunately this world is full of preferences and in my opinion this mix of guitars is actually good.
BR>For those of us who grew up listening to "Surfing with the Alien", Passion and Warfare" and "Rising Force", this G3 is heaven. BR>You quickly find out that the only guitar player who is still in evolution is Vai. He is the only one of the 3 that still comes out in new ways, with new sounds and better than before. Satriani rallies around his old stuff for most of his set and Malmsteen still lives in the 80s and plays the music that made him great 20 years ago and 60 pounds ago. There are better videos of the 3 of them by themselves sold at this website.BR>The good stuff comes when its time to jam. Yngwie actually complements Steve and Joe fine and adds a new spark to the G3 jam. You cant help but watch in awe as these 3 guitar mosters play their best chops and duel it out. Climax hits when in the middle of "Little Wing" all 3 players sound like one guitar just for a couple of seconds and you realize that harmony is universal. BR>I wish that these 3 great players would have thought of G3 during the early 90s when Malmsteen was sharper, more sober and would actually play rhythm; Satriani was more rebelious and Vai was a bit more raw. BR> For rock guitar players who were influenced by the 80s and 90s, this is still too good today to miss it

If you believe, you will be satisfied

I saw this show when it came to Oregon, but they held it in this concrete building which has terrible sound (I heard they had been having sound problems in general on this tour); so I was eager to see how it sounded on DVD. I think there's some problems in the balance between all the different guitars, especially during Vai's set, you can barely hear Tony McAlpine (...)! I notice a lot of people criticizing Satriani; saying that he shamefully reproduces his recordings note for note live and that he sounds the weakest in the jam. Satch is a master composer; he does a little improv in his legato lines and such, his music is tightly arranged though. If he didn't play it for the most part like it is on a record then it would fall apart, thus it's stupid to hold this against him. I think Satch has the broadest style of all of them; he's the blues guy with metal technique, Ynwie's style is dominated by classical influence combined with a technique known as "tendonitis", and I don't know what Vai is. Vai's stuff is too...out there, it's composed fastidiously but it sounds like a jam, and his squealing often annoys me. Ynwie is an astounding musician, listen to any of his solos during the jam; all of the right notes are there, but he has a habit of obscuring the musical quality of his playing with masterbatory technique. His acoustic guitar solo is great, and his set will certainly glut your appetite for sonic sensory assualt, though ultimately his stage antics and ADHD playing especially during the jam leave me trying to picture him in a clown costume. I miss the Satch set from the first G3 video; The Extremist aside, this one just makes me want more. They could have chosen a better mix of songs for one thing, I can't believe Always with me Always with you still hasn't made it on to a G3 video. I don't know Vai's career too well so I can't say much about his set, I think it's pretty lame, but that's me. A good video overall, worth it if you like any one of these players. The poor set selection keeps it a star short of five.
