Faith vs Fortune

Based on historical incidents, this screenplay, written by Robert Bolt, shows the clash between faith and greed, with the Gurani Indians of Brazil caught in the middle. Recall that Bolt's A Man for All Seasons was also about the conflict between faith and political expediency. Robert DeNiro plays a mercenary and slaver who loses his desire to live because of who he has become, but redeems himself through service to others. Jeremy Irons plays a Jesuit priest who lives out his faith among the Gurani as he seeks to protect them from the machinations of greedy politicians and landowners. There are some spectacular scenes in the movie, some excellent music, and some inspired acting. Perhaps, as others have suggested, the movie might have been stronger had someone other than Joffe directed it. He seems not to have understood what the movie was actually about, and his commentary was idiotic at times. For example, at one point he says "the movie is about women". At other times he says "the movie is about finding peace", which is perhaps closer. If not for Joffe's commentary I would have rated the movie 5 stars.

A Great Movie finally on DVD

This film takes us deep into 18th Century South America and serves as a heart-rending commentary on man's inhumanity to man. It is one of the best movies of all time dealing with issues of social injustice.
In 1986 this film received seven Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture. However, it won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. The cinematography, the story, the actors, and the music should have supplied enough impetus to have this released in DVD format earlier. It stars Robert DiNiro and Jeremy Irons. Liam Neeson has a supporting role.
I am excited about the coming release of this DVD. I own the VHS version; and while it is good, you need the DVD to do this picture justice. I am looking forward to pre-ordering The Mission on DVD.

An Excellent Movie

The movie "The Mission" is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Roland Joffe puts together an all-star cast and tells a religous story of the Guarani, a indian tribe settled deep in the Paraguay jungle. The hero of this movie, Father Gabriel, played by Jeremy Irons, leads a group of Jesuit preists to convert this Indian tribe into Christianity. However, the ending is a sad one due to the Spanish and Portuguese wiping out the missions as well as most of the tribe. Robert DeNiro also plays a role in this movie as Rodrigo Mendoza. Him and Jeremy Irons are a blockbuster duo. The movie is filmed in the jungle with an excellent use of the camera and as well as a outstanding score. This movie was directed with the intent to inform the audience of the hardships faced by the Guarani in this time period and accurate history. I really enjoyed this movie and recomend it for all to see.
