urbane and gritty tale of desparation

this period piece set in the depression era is a polished piece of film making.this ISNT a movie.there are 3 main stories and each one intertwines with the others one way or another.in 1,theres the family life of the burt young charactor(its been a while and i dont recall charactors names),then theres the whole union strike where its workers agains owners/scabs.then theres the''rude awakening''of sexual preferences and love gone wrong.extra kudos for jennifer leighs extraordinary commitment she made to her charactor.the cinematography, set design, direction, writing, score, acting, pacing were all top notch.this a brutally frank depiction of how innocent yet unforgivingly violent(and not just physically)the struggle to make ends meet was then.resently ...

"GRABS YOU BY THE ......WON'T LET GO"

THAT is the only way to put it! No holes barred here, this one does surgery without anesthesia!
JENNIFER JASON LEIGH stuns as the prostitute [?] Tralala, yeah, it's been said before, but "Bold", "Daring", "Raw & Honest" [with that heart of unplated gold] aptly apply. Still unappreciated! THAT ending!
A great period piece, set in the early fifties [err 1950ish] it covers everything from Unions, sexual awakening [with deadly results], "coming of age", and good old homebuds!
It's based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr. - well worth reading AFTER seeing this.
Brilliant direction by Uli Edel.
Cannot say more - that would ruin this experience - a close cousin "Strangers In The City", an earlier work - tough!

Nightmarish in the extreme!

(...) As it was, this movie profoundly depressed me. (...)There is tenderness in the depiction of a young man's adoration for a prostitute (Jennifer Jason Leigh), as well as comic relief (of sorts) in the complications arising from an unplanned pregnancy. Unfortunately these moments are few and far between, and the cumulative effect of numerous beatings (starting with the very first scene!), cowardice and sexual violence will greatly disturb most viewers.
The acting, however, is top-notch. The entire cast is thoroughly believable - depressingly so in the case of Stephen Baldwin and his fellow thugs. Director Uli Edel is a master at creating atmosphere, and an operatic sense of doom permeates the entire movie, helped in no small measure by Mark Knopfler's beautiful but ominous score.
As a movie I would give Last Exit to Brooklyn five stars for its execution, but just one star for its sense of life. Nihilists will love it for reinforcing their own bleak view of life, but romantics should definitely give it a miss.
