Massive Attack - Eleven Promos | Year: 2002 Classification: Music Video - Pop/Rock Directed: - Michel Gondry - Wiz - Jonathan Glazer - Baillie Walsh - Stephane Sednaoui - Walter Stern Hmmm.... I love Massive Attack and have all the CDs and even a couple of LPs (still yet to get a decent turntable tho). At least one MA CD is always in my car. So when the DVD became available (ordered from the UK in December 2001) I grabbed it. When it arrived....hmmmm.... I'd expected the music to be remixed into 5.1 DD - nope, it's still in PCM stereo. And very flat stereo too. The image quality is OK, but there are no extras. The title says it all: "Eleven Promos" and that's about it. My fave song, "Be Thankful For What You've Got", suffers from a wierd video clip and unsympathetic remix for video. Then again, "Teardrop" is quite moving. "Safe From Harm" has a new meaning when you see the video clip (trust me - I thought I understood the lyrics from the CD) and "Protection" is also excellent. But overall I'm disappointed. Good, and probably a must-have for most MA fans, but I'm indifferent. Simply Amazing... Within the past year, I was introduced to all sorts of new music. I stuck mainly to the rap/hip-hop scene, but some other songs caught my attention. Indie, Trip-Hop, Trance...all sorts. However, three groups caught me off guard. After hearing Tricky's "Overcome" I knew I had to get more. Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky blew my mind. I was a Portishead fan, then a Tricky fan, always leaving Massive Attack in last place. But then I began getting into their songs and I fell in love. I bought this DVD after my love for Massive Attack reached it's peak. I had no idea who these people were and what kind of things ran through their imaginations, so I figured I'd give it a try (and it's a low price...). I got the CD, popped it into my DVD player and began watching. I thought I had hit the center of pothead land. The videos were confusing and disturbing. I saw every video once, then put it away for a few days. I just wasn't into it. Later, my brother comes home and I decide to let him watch the videos...so he can judge on his own. After second viewing, I began to understand. I figured out who these people were...what they were thinking...why they made these videos. These aren't the normal MTV music videos with cars, gold chains and people dancing around like a bunch of ... animals. This is art. These music videos are for anyone. Young to old. I, myself, am 15 and was a bit surprised at the nudity in one of the videos. However, as you would imagine, I enjoyed it and moved on to the next video. A great DVD all 'round. No extras, however, and nothing but a menu to the songs. A must buy for ANY Massive Attack fan. Great Videos MONO SOUNDTRACK I was pretty disappointed with the DVD's sound. I have not a problem if the band decided to release the videos in mono, but somebody along the way forgot to inform the customers about this decision, and the disc itself has printed "LPCM Stereo" on it. That is the ONLY problem I have with the soundtrack. I don't ask for 5.1 sound, simply because 90% of music DVD's with 5.1 are "faux", in other words, echo and reverb added on the surrounds, which results in horrible sound imaging. Much better off with PCM Stereo and using your amplifier's Dolby Prologic II if you can. Why am I disappointed? Well, I don't recall if the videos were in stereo when I watched them on TV, but if they were, which I highly think the case, then a mono soundtrack doesn't hold true to the original video as it was conceived. Anyway, still a collection of great videos from some amazing directors like Gondry and Sednaoui.
