They had huge success in the eighties and are the best selling german popgroup of all time. Their music style can be categorised as Eurodance/Eurobeat. In the beginning of the eighties Dieter and Thomas met each other. In that time Dieter wrote songs for German schlager singers and Thomas was a German Schlager singer. Dieter produced five songs in german for Thomas without success. During a vacation at Mallorca in 1984 Dieter invents the Modern Talking concept and asks Thomas to sing together in English. Their first single was called "You're My Heart, You're My Soul". It was accompanied by a low budget clip filmed in a cellar with some smoke. However the song became a huge hit, reaching number 1 position all over the world. It was followed by "You Can Win If You Want", "Cheri, Cheri Lady", "Brother Loui" and "Atlantis Is Calling", which all reached the number 1 position of the German charts. The Modern Talking sound was characterised by sweet melodies and high pitched vocals in the second part of the refrain. First it was thought that Dieter sang these. However it appeared many years later that in fact these vocals were song by 6 different singers. After the smaller hits "Geronimo's Cadillac" and "Jet Airliner" Modern Talking splits in 1987. This was due to the wife of Thomas Anders, Nora Balling. She prohibited female background dancers in clips and during life performances. Dieter did not like her influence. After Thomas and Nora divorce, Thomas and Dieter get into contact again and in 1998 they decide to bring out an album with remixes of their old hits. This album "Back For Good" became the best selling album of Modern Talking. Between 1999 and 2003 Modern Talking make five new albums with new material. These albums were mainly successful in Germany. In 2003 they split again after a fight. Dieter states that Thomas had stolen money of the band. Thomas denies this. Their last life performance was in June 2003 in Berlin.
