Mockingbird Murdered In May.

Since the late 1960's, the movie musical for all intents and purposes was dead. It wasn't until EVITA and more recently MOULIN ROUGE, that the genre began to show signs of a long overdue recovery. Prior to those films, several attempts were made to revive the genre including Disney's 1992 NEWSIES.
The timing just was not right for the film when it was released because the movie bombed in theatres. However, the movie has received a second life in video and is beginning to gather the respect it deserves that is so long overdue. NEWSIES has everything that people like in musicals: great dance numbers, charming music, and a talented cast. The movie is based on the actual 1899 newspaper strike by New York's newsboys. The film stars Christian Bale as Jack Kelly, the newsie who starts the strike. Bill Pullman is a delight to see portraying a sympathizing journalist who works for THE SUN. Ann-Margret appears as Medda, a vaudville star who's a friend of Kelly's, but unfortunately she disappears half way through the show. Robert Duvall has an embarrassing role as Joseph Pulitzer; Duvall's look is right but his characterization makes Pulitzer to appear as a crazed madman, instead of the titan he was. The music was composed by Alan Menken.
A delightful overlooked musical that provides a couple of hours of quality entertainment.

this musical is so much fun to watch! very enjoyable

A film by Kenny Ortega
"Newsies" is a musical set in 1899 New York City. There was no home delivery of the newspaper. Newspapers were sold by newsies: kids selling the papers on the street. It is up to them to make people want to buy the paper and read about the news. As Jack Kelly (Christian Bale) says several times during the movie, "headlines don't sell papes, newsies sell papes". Feeling the pinch of competition, newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer (Robert Duvall) decides to make a change to the price of the newspaper...but not the price that the customer pays. Pulitzer charges the newsie more to buy a stack of papers to sell, so Pulitzer makes more money but the newsies have to sell that many more papers to make the same amount of money as before. Instead of simply giving into Pulitzer, the newsies strike.
That is the simple version of the story. It is told with song and dance numbers and while I have typically not been a big fan of the musical, I loved this movie. The songs were high energy and very catchy. The accents the characters used were a little silly, but it felt appropriate. The cast is mostly children (with Bale being the eldest and the leader of the newsies), but there are adults, though they do not have as much to do in the film as the kids. Ann-Margaret and Bill Pullman co-star. I would recommend this movie to anyone, even if they do not normally like musicals. It is cute, it is light-hearted, it is fun, and it is a good movie.

NEWSIES IS THE BEST!!!!! I love this movie!

Well, if you didn't already read my title NEWSIES IS THE BEST! And I love it. It's a great story about friendship and sticking up for what you believe in. Plus, it's Christian Bale and David Moscow...how can you go wrong with those two! I love the singing and dancing too. If you love the music as much as I did I suggest you buy the soundtrack because it's awesome! I'm telling you girls, if you have a bad day, pop this movie in and watch it. I mean it's a bunch of cute boys singing and dancing...it works everytime. I recomend this movie to anyone who likes musicals, boys, and great Disney magic. Watch it...trust me. It's probably one of my favorites movies of all time! If your cool you won't regret it.
