Nothing to Lose | Actors/Actresses: - Kelly Preston - Rebecca Gayheart LAWRENCE Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins are two tremendous Hollywood talents with a very broad range reaching from drama to comedy. Therefore, even with a dumb script Lawrence and Robbins made an excellent comedy team. They played off well one against the other. BUT . . . Gratutious racism instead of clever dialogue in NOTHING TO LOSE is offensive. When Eddy Murphy once in awhile responds in a white-guy, black-guy movie using the term "whitey" it's O.K. (e.g., TRADING PLACES and BEVERLY HILLS COP). When in a FAMILY THING (see my review), James Earl Ray asks his half brother Earl Pritcher (played by Robert Duvall), "how does it feel to be a colored?" that's O.K. too. These are in the context of the plot and characters, and it makes sense because it is consistent with the story line. But in NOTHING TO LOSE, Martin Lawrence keeps addressing Tim Robbins as "white boy" and "whitey," and it's NOT "O.K." Why? In the context of Lawrence's character (who we later get to know as a decent out of work, self-educated, unemployed, loyal family man black-guy) this incessant "whitey" and "white boy" is totally out of character. This can be so-called racism in reverse; a kind of stealth racism. It is still racism in a movie trying to pretend to be "hip" and "cool" .... and fails at both! Well that's the writer and director Steve Oedekerk 's fault. Instead of trying to immortalize himself on screen (he plays the wacky security guard), Oedekerk should have focued on making the movie! On the positive side, there are several good car chase scenes (special effects) and fairly humorous hold-up scenes. The similarly talented McGinley and Esposito played two real bad guy crooks competing with and pursuing the Lawrence/Robbins amateur crooks. In the end there is no morality or deep humor in the movie. Given the great acting talent available to Oedekerk, NOTHING TO LOSE wound up being a pretty limp product. This movie is worth seeing for the occasional funny scenes which Lawrence and Robbins manage to pull off .... but other than that, don't expect much from this flick. From Bad To Worse In "Nothing To Lose" Nick Beam (Tim Robbins), a white executive from the suburbs of Los Angeles, is having a really bad day. To start with, he walks in on his wife in bed with another man. He's having a really rough time with his boss. And to top it all off, he gets carjacked by T.(Terrence) Paul (Martin Lawrence). Feeling he has "nothing to lose," Nick decides to turn the tables on this would be carjacker and take him for the action packed thrill ride of his life. In this 1997 comedy, directed by Steve Oedekerk, you will get 98 minutes of gut busting laughs. If you like comedies with lots of action, hold-ups, high speed chases, and revenge, I would recommend this movie to you. I give this film four stars because, while it is a very funny film, it does have a lot of foul language. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend this film for young people, or people who prefer to keep young sensitive ears. Absolutely funny! I'm a fan of Tim Robbins. I saw this at the movies and just had to have it in DVD. The story is a typical buddy film but the chemistry between Robbins and Martin Lawrrence was priceless. The funniest line from Robbins in response to the real spider crawling on his head was, "I'm not up on all this jive talkin' homeboy lingo". This is a must see!
