Good, But Drags and Over-Stretches At Times 3.5 Stars

Steve Martin plays an uptight, irritable businessman trying to make it home for Thanksgiving with his family. John Candy plays a friendly but annoying guy who is going somewhere, but you're never quite sure where. Candy's character latches on to Martin's character, and the two encounter mishap after mishap as they try to get where they want to go. Martin doesn't dislike Candy, but just doesn't want to be bothered (he's busy with More Important Things). Imagine a big friendly golden retriever who wants to jump all over you and lick your face, but you're all dressed up for church and a family get-together afterward, and you're running late. That's the feel of most of this movie.
The reason why I give it only three stars is that, despite having two very funny comedians as stars and an interesting premise, along with sight gags and pratfalls a-plenty, this film isn't as funny as it should have been. I don't know why it misses the mark but, for me, it misses. From reading the other reviews, some people love this movie. I'm glad for them. It just doesn't do it for me. Maybe it's trying too hard to be funny? Hmmm.

Candy and Martin at their best

I saw this film in the theater when it was initally released. This is by far and away one of my favorite films. John Candy sometimes played the "fat man" roles but in this movie his weight is not important. He plays a lovable warm well meaning character that by the end of the film you wish you had friends that loyal and giving. Steve Martin is fantastic in this film as well. The only Martin film that he may have played a better character would be Roxanne (it's close though). If you know anything about John Candy, you will recognize imediately that he had an intrigal part in selecting the music that is used in the background of this film. It's the songs that he loved. This is the type of film that whenever I am channel surfing and pass by it, I immediately stop and finish watching it. If you like Candy you will love this film. Too bad that Martin and Candy never did make another film as a team. We missed some great comedy with the passing of John Candy. And by the way, "Those aren't pillows".

TOPS!!

Call me silly, but I am 44 and have been watching movies most of my life. This is my #1 favorite movie of all time. It cant compare with the great movies throughout history, but they are not my #1 favorite....this one is. How is that for a review?
