A delight in pot comedy

Think of those wacky British comedies from the past, then think of Cheech and Chong. Mix them together and you have this marvel- Saving Grace. It is a very funny comedy that is one of the best pot comedies ever, right up there with the old C & C movies and Half Baked.
Grace is played by Brenda Blethyn, as usual a delight, who is a widow who is about to lose her house. Until a gardener (Craig Ferguson from the Drew Carey Show, who also co wrote/produced this movie) gets her in a scheme to grow hemp in her greenhouse. The climax is uproariously funny (the two tea drinking lades steal they're scene) as well is much of the rest of the film. Even if the there are some un-needed side plots, the film is must see.

Saving Grace- the year's funniest film

Saving Grace was nothing less than an explosion of pure English charm twisted into a crime/ Cheech and Chong comedy that produces an infinite number of smiles afterwards. This was probably my favorite film of 2000. Brenda Blethyn is masterful in her role as the innocent-yet-I-have-no-way-to-save-my-manor-but-grow-weed persona. Craig Fergusen proves that he is more than a sitcom boss in his role as this movie's writer and Grace's pothead gardener. He portrays the very human conflict between youthful exuberence and the necessity to mature (hence quit selling the chronic). Working at a small movie theater, I found myself unable to tear myself away from this film, and I still miss it. Hearing the audience explode at the film's funnier moments (which were quite a number in few) was enjoyment enough. It's a shame not enough people picked up on it.

Pass the dutchie, Grace

I loved Brenda Blethyn so much in "Secrets and Lies" that picking up "Saving Grace" was a no-brainer for me. Grace Trevethyn (Blethyn) is devestated by her husband's sudden suicide, but even more astonished at what apparently brought it on- he mortgaged everything they own and the bank is ready to foreclose. As Grace brainstorms how to get the dosh to keep her home, her gardner and loyal friend Matthew ("Drew Carey"s Craig Ferguson), whose girlfriend is unexpectedly pregnant, offers Grace a solution that will solve their prospective money woes: use Grace's horticulture know-how and ample greenhouse to nurse and multiply his marijuana plant to sell to a dealer. The humor sometimes slips into Benny Hill mode as Matthew and his doctor friend Martin (played by "British Men Behaving Badly"'s Martin Clunes, who is also the voice of the children's cartoon "Kipper")help Grace fend off the bank and the cops, not to mention the stodgy residents who all know what Grace is up to, but don't discuss it. One of the films funniest moments comes when two old ladies (one of whom is played by Emma Thompson's Mum Phyllida Law) stumble upon Grace's stash and think it's tea. They brew up a cuppa and get seriously stoned. Then, the film takes a more ridiculous approach as Grace and her husband's mistress enter a seedy London club to find a dealer to sell the stuff to. Still, this little ripple isn't enough to bring "Saving Grace" down to 4 stars for me. All around jolly good fun!
