Saving Private Ryan
Description: Spielberg's WWII tour-de-force chronicles the journey of an outfit who is under orders to track down Private James Ryan and return him to his mother in America, where she is grieving the unimaginable loss of her three other sons. After an unforgettable opening twenty minutes which realistically and horrifically depicts the Normandy Invasion, the script falls back into conventional Hollywood-isms, as we meet and greet the individuals in the outfit: the seemingly hardened leader (Hanks), the cocky New Yorker (Burns), and the wannabe writer who'd rather be carrying a typewriter than a gun (Davies). When they finally find Ryan (Damon), he wants to stay and fight for his country. A
closing battle nearly matches the opening scene in impact, and Spielberg concludes matters with a present-tense bookend, as in SCHINDLER'S LIST, that drills the point home.

The mission is the man...

Master filmmaker Steven Spielberg presented this groundbreaking film, set against the backdrop of World War 2. And the resulting film is stunning, gritty and powerful. It pulls no punches with its realistic display of warfare, avoiding glorification. In the first 25 minutes, D-Day is recreated with a level of reality never seen on-screen. Aggressive filmmaking, Spielberg and Uber-composer John Williams left the Omaha Beach invasion without a musical score making the attack all the more realistic.
The story itself follows a group of soldiers sent on a mission to pluck one soldier, PVT RYAN from the war and send him home safely to his mother. The squad leader Miller, portrayed by Tom Hanks works hard to keep his group focused on their mission, as the thought of their mission causes morale issues. All the time, lives are lost as the war conflict escalates.
The casting is great and many of the young soldiers have since started fruitful careers. Tommy Sizemore, Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Barry Pepper, Adam Goldberg, Edward Burns and Matt Damon have gone on to more roles. Even Ted Danson makes an appearance. Spielberg uses some of his most aggressive filmmaking yet and earned his Academy Award. This is a stunning film, but may be too graphic for more sensitive viewers.
The DVD has a great audio transfer whether you get the 5.1 or DTS issue. The video transfer in 1 1.85:1 widescreen format is stunning preserving Janusz Kaminski's gritty cinematography. Also included is a short making of documentary. A stark and important film.

best dts sound on movie so far

this dvd is encoded in half the regular bit rate dts suggest to encode. yet bullet-flying-by effect are first rate compared to any other movies i've heard on dvd. funny, but ironically first dts that captured my attention to multi channel audio was 'forest gump' in 1994 at local theater. tom hanks dodging bullets in jungle scene which made every audiances head turning, searching for speakers to find where the sound was coming from. same actor here turning heads again with 'Saving private ryan'. <P

Powerful, stunning, emotional and memorable

This is a movie for the ages but certainly not for the faint hearted or the squeamish. From the explicit bloodshed and graphic violence of Normandy, to the casual grousing of the enlisted men, to Ambrose's band of brothers mentality that clearly emerges, one can't help but admire this generation and the deft handling of the topic by Speilberg. Small, overwhelming scenes include Ryan's mother collapsing on the porch upon the appearence of her minister bearing obviously terrible news and George Marshall's somber reading of Abraham Lincoln's letter to another war mother, eighty years earlier. As Captain John Miller, Tom Hanks' mission is the basis for the film, to save the one survising brother of the decimated Ryan family, a mission both simple yet daunting. And as great as Tom Hanks filled this role, my helmet goes out to Ted Sizemore for his "we're in business!" gung ho attitude and skills.
Miller may have died due to his own humanity in sparing a German prisoner. Private Ryan had to be haunted by Captain Miller's dying whisper, "Earn this!" When Ryan, fifty years later, turns to his wife and pleads: "Tell me I've lived a good life," my eyes well with tears of respect and admiration for all concerned with the real and imagined Private Ryans.
See it. Buy it. Remember it.

A Magnificent war film!

Steven Spielberg is a favorite director of mine. His outstanding contribution to cinema include the films SCHINDLER'S LIST, E.T, JAWS, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. Then came his brainchild, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. It's a unforgettable film achievement that won five Academy Awards, including best director, but was robbed of the Best Picture award to SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. Nevertheless, this film has had a philosophical and lasting influence to the way war films should match.
The World-War II era based film is loaded with powerful and graphic war scenes and the film's message is profound. Honor, dignity, and courage is spread throughout the film.
Outstanding actor Tom Hanks portrays Captain John Miller who leads his troops through the historic D-day invasion during WWII. He and his deticated men then embark on a dangerous mission to track down Private James Ryan, whose three brothers died on enemy line, and bring him home.
The production values are amazing. The cinematography is well-done, it sort of has a documentary feel to it. The sound is the best I've heard in a film ever! It sounds great on the DVD! The D-Day intro is absolutely breathtaking.
Spielberg made his usual masteriso work into making this the most realistic vision of any war film. It could have been the best, if the film would have a better story. But I mean that in the nicest way!
Recommended all the way!
