Shakira Biography
Shakira (Shakira Isabel Mebarek Ripoll) is a Colombian singer, songwriter, actress, model and dancer. She was born on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla in Colombia. Her mother Nidia del Carmen Ripolli Torrado is Colombian with a Italian background and her father Don William Mebarak Chadid a US born Lebanese.
She scored a huge hit with "Whenever, Wherever" in 2002.
At the age of 12 Shakira moves from Barranquilla to Bogota. In 1991 her first album "Magia" is released, followed in 1993 by "Peligro". These albums were not a success commercially. Disappointed because of the moderate success she start acting in the television series "El Oasis" in 1994. In 1996 she releases a new album "Pies Descalzos", which includes the single "Estoy Aqui". It was a big success and reached the number one position in the Colombian charts.
To accelerate her career she takes Emilio Estefan (the husband of famous singer Gloria Estefan) as producer. In the end of 2001 she releases her first English album "Laundry Service". This album contained the single "Whenever, Wherever". This song supported by a great video became a number 1 hit in many countries all around the world, including France, Germany, The Netherlands, Australia, Switzerland, Ireland, Spain in 2002. Other follow-up hits were "Underneath Your Clothes" and "Objection Tango". In 2005 she has a new number 1 hit with the Spanish song "La Tortura", taken from her new Spanish album "Ficajio;oacute;n Oral".
In 2000 she starts a relationship with Antonio de la Rúa, the son of the former president of Argentina, Fernando de la Rúa. Since 2001 they are engaged.
Shakira speaks fluently English, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese and Italian.
