Excellent! One of Woody Allen's Funniest!

I absolutely love this movie. I remember watching it on Allen's birthday and they were showing a marathon. I had never heard of this one, and I can't believe I'm a big fan of his work and never came across this one. A must-see! Woody Allen stars as a man who went into a hospital in 1973 for a routine ulcer operation, went into a coma, and wakes up exactly 200 years in the future, having been frozen. What ensues is one the most hilarious movies around. Allen and Diane Keaton are a dynamic comic duo, and the screenplay by Allen and Marshall Brickman is excellent. Full of hilarious sight gags in the tradition of Buster Keaton and great one-liner jokes in the style of Bob Hope. I discovered that this was Allen's intention. Along with the excellent performances by Allen and Keaton, Woody Allen's direction and use of music steers toward brilliance. The Rag Time Rascals, the band he jammed with on occasion, plays throughout the movie, with Allen on the clarinet. Awesome Flick!

Science Fiction version of Bananas

__________________
Sleeper is not Woody's best "early, funny" movie, and there's the same soapbox as Bananas, but even the look of the film is better. Although it wasn't just an excuse to set up a banana-peel gag, that scene is pretty d- funny. Some of the jokes have lost their timeliness, but that's the nature of jokes.
Considering that Allen put out "What's Up Tiger Lily" and inspired (among other things) "Mystery Science Theater 3000" (a concept that was tired the first day it aired, IMHO), it's not too much to claim that Allen also pioneered the sci-fi spoof with "Sleeper". This is a no-brainer, you will enjoy it, just buy it already.
"Bananas" is among Woody's worst, but if you liked that POS, you'd have to be completely brain-dead not to like Sleeper. People who are fans of "Bananas" are not really fans of Woody Allen as far as I'm concerned. I don't advocate prison sentences for that lot, but I do lean toward exile on some kind of island prison.

A Spendid Farce.

This is the perfect blend of physical and intellectual comedy. This was back when Woody was great. Diane Keaton is so effervescent that you will not be able to keep your eyes off of her. It's easy to forget how beautiful that she once was. Also, the social satire is outstanding as he comments on BR>I challenge anyone not to laugh during his skit when he wins Miss America as Mrs. Montana. You'll appreciate this purchase I guarantee.
