5 Burps

A magnificent achievement - ranks up there with Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, Blues Brothers, and Monty Python's Holy Grail and Life of Brian.
No DVD extras? That isn't heaven, that sucks!

Bob and Doug McKenzie, formerly of the SCTV show, are the "heroes" of this film. They raise a baby mouse in a beer bottle in a scam to try to get free beer. Instead, the brewery gives them jobs, and strange things start to happen because the Evil Brewmeister has a plan to take over the world. How will the McKenzies are save the day? Get this film and find out!
Of course, the plot is not important, except that it must include beer, touques, and hockey. The McKenzie brothers are the core of the film, and the key is that the plot is set up, and the brothers simply inhabit the story. Moranis and Thomas are absolutely convincing as brothers (even if they don't look alike), probably because they spent so much time together on SCTV. von Sydow, as the villian, is also very good - no one does evil German villian better!
It's not a perfect movie - the portrayal of the patients at the mental hospital is cringe-inducing - but it's far better than most film comedies derived from 1-joke skits from a variety program (SNL cast members, are you listening?). For my money, the Blues Brothers is the pinnacle of achievement, but Strange Brew is a worthy second (yes, better than Wayne's World).
Unfortunately, there are no extras on this DVD. It's great to be able to see this in widescreen, but one SCTV skit and an animated promo do not cut it as extras. There's no commentary! Bring on Bob and Doug to promote their movie! That's what the fans want!

The McKenzie's Score a Hat Trick

Strange Brew follows the adventures of Bob ; Doug McKenzie played by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas respectively. The pair was created for the brilliant SCTV television show and the duo seamless took them to the big screen. The movie's plot revolves around an evil brewmeister (played deliciously by Max Von Sydow) who is concocting a potion that will allow him to control the minds of the people who drink it. The brothers unwittingly stumble onto the plan and with the help of the daughter of the late brewery owner and former hockey player, they foil the plans. Through it all Mr. Moranis and Mr. Thomas are absolutely hysterical. The film is actually the forerunner of such films like Wayne's World, The Coneheads and other Saturday Night Live films that took character sketches from the small screen to the movie screen. The big difference is that Strange Brew is well made, well written and still almost twenty years later, down right hilarious.
