Taking Lives | Year: 2004 Classification: Thriller Directed: - DJ Caruso Actors/Actresses: - Angelina Jolie - Kiefer Sutherland - Ethan Hawke Plodding and cliched - an example of a truly bad thriller Amongst the other publicity for the new film Taking Lives is some idiot movie critic saying "...the best movie of its kind since The Silence of the Lambs." Well, let me be the first, among many people, to say that's bull, and if anything, seeing this first-rate piece of cow dung makes you appreciate how much of a masterpiece Lambs is. But comparison to a classic is besides the point - from the cliched "20 Years Ago" opener, to a hastily tacked-on finale (whose "twist" is obvious to any average movie-goer), Taking Lives hovers just above being a complete disaster. Plot points are awkwardly introduced, characters in the movie (I'm talking about you, Ethan Hawke) parade around like they've never acted a day in their lives, and 'action-packed' climaxes get you into eye-roll overdrive. What you saw in the trailer is basically what you get - some guy's been stealing people's identities, Angelina Jolie is the quirky-but-good FBI agent assigned to help on the case, and Ethan Hawke is a witness to one of the murders. Sure, a plot element or two took me by surprise, but for every one of those there were four that I had pegged minutes beforehand (and I'm considered 'stupid' when it comes to that stuff). Folks, this movie is bad, and I'm one who can enjoy the occasional formulaic Ashley Judd thriller. For the guys: Angelina does take the top off, and I must say it's (drooling) nice. There's also a good U2 song that plays at the beginning of the end of the movie. Unfortunately, those are the only two decent things in this whole mess of a film. GRADE: D Suspenseful, Scary, Stylish and Sexy Taking Lives is a great mystery thriller. Angelina Jolie, Ethan Hawke, and the rest of the superb cast give convincing performances in this movie. There are also some cool action scences and the movie has a gloomy, mysterious feel to it. This is one of those movies that keeps you on the edge of your seat and keeps you guessing till the end.
