The American President | Classification: Comedy Actors/Actresses: - Annette Bening - Michael Douglas - Richard Dreyfuss - Michael J Fox - Martin Sheen - Aaron Sorkin I'm Not A Romantic Comedy Fan, But I Love This Movie The American President inspired Aaron Sorkin to explore the Presidency in a weekly television show, which brought about the hit show "The West Wing." I am a huge fan of the show, so naturally I saw some of Sorkin's other works. A Few Good Men was outstanding, Malice was great, and I also watched Sports Night for a while until it was cancelled. I like Aaron Sorkin's style of writing. The situations are plausible and believable, the characters are written inteligently, the plotting is uniformly excellent, plus there is lots of wit interjected to make it funny. This movie is no exception to any of the rules. Rob Reiner helms this picture and does his usual bang-up job, with more subtlety than usual. The acting is great all around: Michael Douglas is great as the lonely president, Martin Sheen as his Chief of Staff (who is now the President on West Wing), Annette Bening and Michael J. Fox as a hyper and hypochondriac policy adviser is the standout. This is the only romantic comedy I own and I would advise you to buy it too. It also contains an excellent speech at the end by President Andrew Shepard. "It's a time for serious people, Bob, and your fifteen minutes are up." Enjoy I never get tired of watching this great movie "The American President" is a terrific movie about politics, romance, sex, and real life. Michael Douglas leads a terrific cast of characters that I love to hear talk to each other over and over again. I've seen this movie so many times, I nearly have it memorized. President Andy Sheppard (Douglas) is having problems pushing his crime bill through Congress, but those problems intensify when he finds himself falling for the beautiful environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening). The press is all over them from every angle, and Sheppard's 63*pproval rating is dropping like a rock. The romance in this story is sweet, but it takes second place to the witty dialogue written by "Sports Night" creator Aaron Sorkin, which makes every character equally enjoyable. Martin Sheen should have won an Oscar for his performance as White House Chief of Staff A.J. Mackinerny, and Michael J. Fox is terrific as Louis Rothchild, who delivers a great speech in the film. The two leads, Douglas and Bening, are great together, and for every moment they are on the screen together, we forget that we're watching a movie. Rob Reiner does a terrific directing job, and turns out a movie that surpasses "When Harry Met Sally." Just Average... I found this film to be just average. The story is nice, but a little unbelievable and very predictable. These films are usually my type, but for some reason, this one didn't do anything for me.
