The Art of War | Year: 2000 Classification: Action Directed: - Christian Duguay Actors/Actresses: - Wesley Snipes - Anne Archer - Donald Sutherland - Maury Chaykin - Michael Biehn Wesley, Come on man.. You can do Better. This Film is Loud, Fast, Dumb and... Fun. Without the Furious Fists of Wesley Snipes, this film would definately be stuck in Straight-to-Video Hell. Most of the problems stem from the Direction. In "The Assignment" Christian Duguay proved to be a very talented Director, through his use of "Restraint". The "Art of War" doesn't seem to be seeking restraint. Instead it goes for Cheap and Fast thrills at every turn, which would have been great if Duguay had attended the "Michael Bay Music Videos and Film School". The cutting is far too fast paced, sometimes so much so that you miss the explosion or the car crash, which is really a hugh problem. They spend half the budget on these action set pieces, only to cut to Wesley snipes fleeing the scene. Nit-picking aside, Michael Biehn makes the most of a side-kick role, frankly, he saves the entire film. The same can't be said for Donald Sutherland and Anne Archer, who walk through their parts, trying not to show their faces. But, hey, there's fights and guns, thats all us Action Nuts need to hear. Enjoyable action flick, extra boost by hilarious message It seems that in Hollywood these days many movie makers feel it is their duty to engage in political propaganda. Most of this propaganda is left-leaning and the Art of War is no exception. As an action flick I found the movie entertaining. Snipes has the screen presence to earn this movie it's third star. Without him it deserves two at best. However for some reason the film-makers decided to shove down our throats their personal beliefs that the UN should rule the world. This heavy handed poltical propaganda message is so ludicrous that it raises this movie feom the level of the mundane to the sublime... The idiocy of the movie's political message has to be seen to be believed. Ed Wood's work is unintentionally rivalled by hilarious tripe. This earns this movie its fourth star. For example Ann Archer plays a character who is "evil" because she believes that it is wrong for American politicians and businessmen to give US nuclear secrets to Communist China who then give them to terrorist nations (like Iran). Apparently the movie makers believe that such actions by US citizens are good. Most people would call them treasonous. These little gems surface throughout the movie and add a simply (and unintentionally) hilarious plotline. I laughed uproariously throughout! Definitely worth viewing! Wesley despatching badies in cool movie You know you will always get top class action and style when Wesley Snipes is involved in any movie. Wesley is both a convincing actor and superb martial artist, which is what makes his movies so unique. The Art of war is maybe a bit too complicated but its engrossing stuff - political conspiracies, incredibly slick action scenes - wow, is all I can say!
