The Four Feathers (Widescreen Collector's Edition) | Year: 2002 Classification: Drama Directed: - Shekhar Kapur Actors/Actresses: - Wes Bentley - Kate Hudson - Heath Ledger Highly under-rated movie I have enjoyed watching this DVD immensely. The movie needs to be watched without thinking about the previous versions or the book. Do not watch it with a preconceived notion as to what the movie should or shouldn't be. Take it for what it is. A movie that has a heart felt story that is presented with superb acting. True there are holes in the story. True, the ideas are not what we believe today (but most historical movies don't have the same values as we have today) But look past these ideas and just breath in the fine performances and the story. Ledger proved to me he was a great actor. Pay close attention to Ledger in the the scenes with Abuu in the prison, Jack in the desert and at the end, and Ethne in the church. The whole story is told in his expressions and his eyes. <BR> <BR>Buy this DVD and watch it, not once, but several times. The first time watching Four Feathers was intense, but the more I watch it, the more I love it. And also watch it with the director speaking - it gives a whole new light on the story. And just as an added note -- my 11 year old son has watched this with me several times. He not only gets the story and understands it but he asks to watch it. He also has commented on the fact that he can't understand why people don't like Four Feathers. Out of the mouths of children I suppose. Good Idea, poor execution This movie could have shown so many more sides of war, love, friendship, and personal struggle. But it turned out to be a film about a young man and his troubles, the typical European meets different African and they learn to respect each other. The film would have been better with more character development. The only basis for the friendship between the British officers is a rugby game, not much to go on. And the relationship between Harry and his fiancée is assumed passion. A huge part of the movie was Harry's redemption from being labeled a coward. The significance of bravery, honor, and other military values wasn't demonstrated at all by the actors, it was presented to the audience in the form of a pre-film message on the screen. Very weak approach considering the importance of that theme throughout the film. Some key elements of the story could have been added. For instance, the journey to and from Africa could probably have been used to give background to the characters in the form of flashbacks or something. Plus the journey itself probably would have been quite an ordeal. Imperial Britain and the British class system (especially in the military) are both incredible interesting. The film could have focused on that some more. The ending was a bit weak too; it left me thinking "of course." All in all the scenery, effects, and acting were alright. Like I mentioned earlier . . . it could have been much better. A Cinema Insult l would give 4 white feathers to the following who were involved with this remake: 1 to the Editor for a lack of coherence and choppy scenes; 1 to the writer for incompetent plotting; 1 to the director for losing control over the basic plot; and the 4th to the studio for releasing this bombastic bomb, an insult to the book and for releasing a movie vastly inferior to the wondrous, compact 1939 version.<BR>As usual for movies of this ilk, the production values were superb, but the poor writing and worse editing ruined its viewing.lt virtually became nonsensical at the end.
