The Man With The Golden Gun | Year: 1974 Classification: Action/Adventure Directed: - Guy Hamilton Actors/Actresses: - Desmond Llewelyn - Roger Moore - Christopher Lee Roger Moore and Chris Lee make slow film interesting This is Roger Moore's second turn as 007. He carries himself well. He is calmer, tougher and suaver. He still smiles easily, which is good, but discards most of the silly puns of LALD. 007 squares off against world class assassin, Francisco Scaramanga as he tries to recover a solar energy device. Christopher Lee, who built a fine career out of playing bad guys, is superb as the confident and eccentric hitman. His island lair is unique among Bond villains. Who else would have a funhouse constructed so he could torment his prey. Maud Adams is beautiful and sexy as Scaramanga's long suffering mistress. Britt Eklund is perhaps the least of all Bond girls. Her character is incompetent and foolish. I'm still not sure what to make of Nick-Nack, Scaramanga's diminutive bodyguard. This film needs much more action. It's just too slow and the action scenes are too brief. Intelligent and generally well acted but understated nearly to the point of boring. I wish the martial arts scene had gone on much longer. The boat chase is also over before you know it. The plot is intriguing but not enough to for a two hour movie. Too many distracting gimmicks. For instances: the car flip accompanied by a slide whistle, the return of the odious rascist blowhard, Sheriff Pepper, a car-plane, and Britt Eklund in the trunk of a flying car. A mixed bag of good ideas and solid acting mixed with dumb ideas and ponderous inaction. Better than Moonraker and AVTAK by far and a little better than Octopussy. Definitely lower-middle of the pack in the Bond canon. One of my favorite Bond movies I found all of the Roger Moore ones the best. LALD, TMWTGG, TSWLM, Moonraker, FYEO, Octopussy, and AVTAK. I know many people think this is the worst out of the Bond series, but I found The Man With The Golden Gun a fun movie to watch. Frankly I enjoyed every minute of it. I think the reason why people don't like it is because there is very little action in this one which in my opinion is a poor reason to dislike it. The acting was great and the scenery was very pretty. My favorite charactor (although he is sort of a bad guy) is Nick Nack, (performed by Herve Villechaize) Scaramanga's butler. Scaramanga is the main villan (performed by Christopher Lee). Scaramanga has his own private little island complete with a shelter, of course, a funhouse and a solar power plant. Scaramanga is obviosly the man with the golden gun. His golden gun fires out these very expensive golden bullets. When these golden bullets are fired the instantly go right through whatever they are fired at. Unless you're looking for a Bond movie with a lot of action, buy this. Even Better Now in STEREO THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN is the "cult" Bond movie to end all "cult" Bond movies. I don't think many people realize that this DVD or even the VHS tape of this movie is in STEREO sound. John Barry's score sounds fantastic. As for the film, it is pure fantasy yet pure "Bond" and very misunderstood.
