More than meets the eye
Having heard in advance that the director is a devotee of Tarkovsky, I was expecting to be baffled, and was, at least in part. At first watching, the movie comes across as "National Lampoon's Siberian Vacation", but I don't think that was the intention! Some things I wish I had been told before seeing it... pay attention to the days of the week (there's evidently some sort of Passion of Christ symbolism going on). Note the fish, white birds, a 3-day trip, etc... If you figure it out, let me know!
