The Street Fighter | Year: 1974 Classification: Foreign Film - Chinese Directed: - Shigehiro Ozawa Actors/Actresses: - Sonny Chiba - Waichi Yamada Brutal martial arts masterpiece This movie is a true classic in the martial arts genre. Sonny Chiba is a great fighter and his character is the baddest hero you could ever imagine. To give you a glimpse into his brutality, in one scene he sells a girl to the mafia because she couldn't pay him for rescuing her brother from prison. She is then drugged and raped! Over the top violence and excellent fight scenes are what make this movie one of the greatest fight flicks ever. Sonny Chiba is the Man! I first became interested in this film years ago when I saw a clip from it in True Romance. And the praise given to Sonny Chiba in Quentin Tarantino's script is right on. Sonny China is a bad mother! The plot of this film is typical to the martial arts genre. Basically Chiba, who plays Terry, is caught up in a Mafia situation that allows him to do a lot of fighting. What makes this film so much fun is how charismatic Chiba is. His character is very dark and very much the antihero. Director Shigehiro Ozawa does a fantanstic job conveying the action which makes the film that much more enjoyable. When The Street Fighter was originally released in the United States it was given a "X" rating because of the graphic violent content. Today some of the bloody deaths are still hard to watch. This is a martial arts classic and anyone who is interested in the genre should see this movie. Sonny makes it worth it. beautifully shot 70's genre action! Sonny Chiba really stretches it across the screen. The faces he makes! The story is that simple/complex gangster/spaghetti western fare, but this film is beautiful to look at. Great closeups, interiors and settings from Tokyo streets to woodsy sun-dappled river banks to oil tankers. Some creepy and outrageous side character/yakuza keep you on your toes as well. All that with a lotta red splatter and a killer soundtrack make this a classic. The DVD has a quiz at the end that is pretty dumb.
