The Thrill of It All! | Year: 1963 Classification: Comedy Directed: - Norman Jewison Actors/Actresses: - Doris Day - James Garner I'm Beverly Boyer and I'm a pig James Garner helps a woman to become pregnant (in his role as a doctor.) He is also the classic conservative husband who assumes that his wife would stay home and make catch up. However, after being offered an enormous amount of money Beverly border decides to take a job doing commercials for the people that James Garner helped. <BR>On the TV shows that Beverly Boyer (Doris Day) advertises on, Carl Reiner gets to play a different era (same plot) bad guy. They say it is too subtle for the audience to notice that it is the same script. After all, we do not notice that the same plots run through most TV programs today. <BR>No one can tell me that Spot Checker could not sell ME soap from a bathtub. Ha, Not risqué huh? <BR>This is a great 60's comedy and if you like the over flowing soap suds scene then you will also enjoy "Bachelor in Paradise" with Bob Hope. The Thrill of 4 Stars Not a lot of people remember that next to the three classic bedroom farces that Doris Day made Rock Hudson, she had made two pretty good ones with James Garner. THE THRILL OF IT ALL (the other being MOVE OVER DARLING) is noteworthy for a classic scene in which James Garner drives a car into a swimming pool (the pool still exists in the Universal Studios "suburban neighborhhood" lot section where you can see the houses of "Leave It to Beaver" and "The Munsters" etc.) Garner plays a physician of a middle aged woman finally becoming pregnant. The husband (a television advirtiser) is so greatful that he invites the Doctor (Garner) and his wife (Doris Day) to a party with a bunch of other television advirtisers. By accident, these execs see Doris Day and she is hired to do commercials for their "Happy Soap" products because of her natural homemaking persona. She then becomes so popular, that it begins to turn-off Garner and it puts a strain on their marriage as she neglects her wifely and motherly duties. Funny and plausible plot, comedic moments, and funny characters make this a classic 60's bedroom farce worthy of the Hudson/Day farces. Script also noteworthy because it's co-written by Larry Gelbart (tv's M.A.S.H.) and Carl Reiner (The Dick Van Dyke Show). Reiner also is featured in some hilarious spots in the movie playing an actor on the dramas that "Happy Soap" is sponsoring. Hilarious because the scripts are exactly the same, but the time periods are changed (i.e. WWII Germany to the American Wild West). Note: Look for veteran character actor Edward Andrews (16 Candles) and Kym Karath who played Gretl - the youngest of the Von Trapp family -- in the movie musical of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Dated, mythical view of American Life, but Fun & enjoyable! Hi all, Just got done re-watching "The Thrill of It All" and here are my reactions: First I think the film is light-hearted fun, and a great look back to the golden days of people living "The American Dream". As usual, Doris was superb as Beverly Boyer, a suburban housewife content to be home caring for her husband and two children and doing amazingly domestic activities such as bottling her own ketchup!! Wow! While Doris looks as I remember her, I was quite taken aback by the youthfulness of James Gardner, whom we have seen on-going on television and movies so have had the opportunity to see him "age" gracefully in front of our eyes. I couldn't surpress a chuckle when the good doctor, frustrated with growing friction with his wife, lights up a cigarette in his hospital office. That's someth e season five regular) is superb. Action, yes. Yet one of the most moving episodes is a one-on-one battle of wits and nerve between two characters in a single room. Wars - some with aliens, some between alien races, and some with just us humans - start & end. There are four ambassadors from alien races on board, with a League of Non-Aligned Worlds to complete the roster. Telepaths of all races (except the Narns) add more colour. Intrigue, smuggling, dealing, double-dealing, romance, all leavened with humourous touches throughout - what more could you ask! For the first four years, the hardest part of being a B5 fan was FINDING it. (Our local station played ping-pong with its time slot.)
