Time and Tide | Year: 2000 Classification: Foreign Film - Chinese Directed: - Hark Tsui Contender This should be regarded as a Hark Tsui film. Just a reminder, Tsui entered the Hollywood arena with "Double Team" starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and a few titles with Jet Li. Not that it's a earth-shattering title, but "Time & Tide" does have its merit and I'm just going to stay on the merit. This is a story with a nice tie with the beginning and end scene that says the nature of men is good. That's nice, or nice enough. Inside this coating, is an action-packed feature film that reminds me heavily of "Die Hard", actions based around elite force being bad guys, and a good guy that somehow (incredibly) negotiate around all the tight corners. For some reason, personally, I feel Tsui wants to show the movie-goers that he's a bit better than John Woo. Okay, it's an action film with a drama coating, but ultimately it has a flare of reality with Tse's character, someone silly enough to believe that a air-gun can make a difference. It's almost unfair to say this is Tsui's statement that he's better than Woo, but if you just want a lot of action-excitment, maybe you'd understand. Classic HK action 21-year-old bartender, Tyler (Nicholas Tse), has a one-night stand with Hong Kong cop (Cathy Chui), and inadvertently gets her pregnant. There's just one problem - she's gay, and her girlfriend's is none to pleased! In an attempt to get money to support his future child, Tyler gets involved with a shady bodyguard business to make ends meet. During the course of events, he meets and befriends a successful hitman Jack (Wu Bai). Tyler envies Jack's relationship with his beautiful wife, and dreams of a similar relationship with Chui, even though she rejects his advances. When a routine job goes horribly wrong, Jack and Tyler end up on opposite sides of the law. Can Tyler prove his innocence and escape with his honor - and his friendship with Jack - in tact? I liked Time and Tide, but at times the cinematography was choppy, especially where the character of Jack was introduced. It seemed the first thirty minutes are all about Tyler and his problems, and suddenly Jack enters the picture. Suddenly we are viewing Jack's world, from his perspective, and I'm like "Whoa, what happened, am I watching the same movie?" I also thought the stereotypical Columbian drug lord with the cockroach torturing fetish was WAY over the top. (But I guess that's the point). What I did like: I DID like Tyler as a character, he was a really nice guy. (A rare thing indeed), and I liked the fact that he took responsibility for his son. I also thought the fact that he slipped money under Chui's door when he thought she wasn't looking, was rather sweet. Don't waste your time The movie tried but it failed in my eyes. I gave it a chance, tried to follow what was going on and I couldn't take it anymore. I had to turn it off not baring to watch the last 30 minutes of this movie. It started off pretty good but then it get so choppy you have no clue what is going on and I missed the connection with the characters over all because the movie was taking me down a path I didn't enjoy. What was missing is WHY were all these people here? What was up with the one guy speaking english and spanish? Who was he and what was the point of him being there? Now I tend not to think during movies and enjoy them for what they are, just to let myself get swept away into a different place for a great experience but this movie failed to do it for me. Don't get me wrong, I love movies like this, I loved such brilliant movies as Eat Drink Man Woman, Bangkok Dangerous (2000), The Road Home to name a few. I'm a sucker for asian/foreign films. If I was choosing a movie just based on how beautiful everyone was, then yeah the only reason I'd chose this film, that is all it has to offer anyone. Disapointed. Just seemed a lot of things were cut out and should have been explained so to keep people hooked and wanting to find out what happens. Just this didn't do it for me and is one I wouldn't recomend to anyone. Looking for a better movie? Check out Bangkok Dangerous (2000), the guys are hot, the plot is great and the action is sizzling. I'm still looking for films that will woo me, this one just didn't do it. In final thoughts, I would have given this movie 1 star, but I gave this film an extra star for its effort in trying to be good.
