themes counter mediocre acting to produce excellence

Since most of the people submitting reviews here are wrestlers, ex-wrestlers, or are associated with wrestling, it is very easy to have a biased point of view towards this movie. While some people critique the screenplay or acting, those that enjoy it are looking past the acting and into the theme of the movie.
After reading the book, it becomes evident that the movie is quite different. While the book focuses on growing up ("coming of age") and life, the movie focuses more on the wrestling aspect, obviously to appeal to the masses. I'd say the book was more award-winning material, while the movie was more inspirational. Wrestling, although a big part of Louden Swain's life, was not as overpowering in the book. The book was not about wrestling per se, but about life and growing up. The movie concentrated on the wrestling aspect more which makes it an excellent motivator. Despite the sometimes mediocre screenplay, this movie is a classic to wrestlers because it shows that the human spirit will overcome all. It accurately portrays the blood, guts, and tears that accompany an athlete involved in the sport. As another reviewer commented, the "Rocky" for wrestlers. A definite recommendation to all wrestlers.

Totally awesome 80s movie & soundtrack!!!!!!!!!

I love this movie because of two reasons 1. Matthew Modine's body and 2. The soundtrack rocks because of Madonna, Red Rider, Journey, Foreigner, and Ex-Babys lead throat/ my favorite bad boy of 80s rock John "Missing You" Waite I think it's the perfect date movie. I'm only 21 and you're all thinking why the hell she likes an 80s movie like "Vision Quest" BTW, John Waite was on "Paper Dolls" in late '84 and his hit "Missing You" was #1 Stateside Peace & Love, Rosie

The Best Wrestling Film EVER Made...

Vision Quest is a truly inspirational film. From it's captivating central character Louden Swain (Modine) right down to it's fantastic soundtrack (Red Rider, Journey). The film centers around a high school seniors' attempt to become the absolute best wrestler he can be by dropping 30 pounds to wrestle the undefeated state champion Brian Chute. Louden is nothing short of obsessed with making the weight and getting on the mat with Chute but that all changes when a homeless artist (Carla) enters his life. Vision Quest is at once a romance and a fascinating look into amateur wrestling. I can still to this day remember my wrestling coach showing us this film and being so totally pumped after it. There's also some great lines between Louden and Chute: "You're a bleeder and I like blood." "Oh yeah, how about you're own?" Anyway, you just can't go wrong with this film especially if you are a wrestler. This film is the ultimate motivational tool for grapplers and just a feel good film for anyone. Highly Recommended.
