What a Girl Wants | Year: 2003 Directed: - Dennie Gordon Actors/Actresses: - Amanda Bynes - Colin Firth - Kelly Preston Really Enjoyed It When I saw the previews for this movie, I knew it would be a movie that I would enjoy. Amanda Bynes stars in WHAT A GIRL WANTS, with Colin Firth. She plays Daphne, the daughter of Henry and her mother, played by Kelly Preston. Her father and mother were seperated, when one of his assistants told her to leave, he thought she left him, she thought he wanted her to leave. She was pregnant with Daphne, and every year Daphne would wish for her father to return, only he did not know he has a daughter. She goes to London to find him, and ultimately, finds herself. There is a lot of humor here, and Firth and Bynes have a lot of chemistry together which is the true treat of the movie. Henry is a politician, and it is awkward at first between him and his daughter. She causes a little ruckus at a few important events before he tells her she needs to abide by certain rules. At this point she has been interested in a young man named Ian, who encourages her to be herself, telling her she was born to stand out. In the end Henry and Daphne's mother learn of the complication, and fall in love again, and get married. Daphne gets back together with Ian (who had left her because she was being proper and unlike herself) and they started dating. The movie was cute and humorous, great music, and also very touching. Overall I was pleased with this movie! It's Fun I thought this was a really cute movie. Although it's defiantly predictable, the cast of well known actors and actresses makes this a great feel good film. The story line follows a girl named Daphne Reynolds (Amanda Bynes) who is in search of her father Lord Henry Dashwood (Colin Firth). From her home in the laid-back streets of China Town, Daphne soon sees the stark contrast between home and London society. If you have an afternoon free this is defiantly a fun romantic comedy to see. Went because of Colin Firth & pleasantly surprised I'm a Colin Firth fan. I liked him in "Fever Pitch" and - most notably on this side of the pond - "Bridget Jones' Diary." He's legendary in the UK for his stirring portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the multi-part BBC adaptation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." Which is all a very long way of saying, well, I went figuring how bad could 'Girl' be if it had Colin Firth? Answer: surprisingly good. Firth is the only one actually *acting* in the film...it's a contrived plot with holes you could drive a truck through...it draws broad (and, at times, unflattering) characterizations of the British...but through all that, it's really a likable, winning movie. Amanda Bynes is adorable and the chemistry between she and 'Dad' Firth seems natural and unforced. As a viewer, you are asked to make a couple of illogical leaps. Like just-turned-17 Daphne sneaking out of the house...for an unannounced transcontinental trip, which 'Mom' Kelly Preston - established at that point as a caring, protective sort - seems to take with a grain of salt. We're also asked to believe that Kelly Preston - luminous, radiant Kelly Preston - has been left 'lonely' and without companionship (while working as the lead signer in a rock band, no less) for 17 years. I think not. A Feel Good Time... There are a lot of pre-teen movies coming out these days, and while the storylines are nothing new, the trick is to find one that isn't forced, and where the acting and setting makes the movie enjoyable. I'll be the first to admit Amanda Bynes wasn't my fave actress before watching this movie, but I think its one of the best ones out there. Her acting is for the most part fluid and funny, and there are many moments that make you laugh out loud. The cast of characters surrounding her, including Colin Firth (Bridget Jones Diary) enhance her own preformance, and who doesn't love a movie set in England? The story is basically about a teenage girl who longs so much for her father, that when given enough information about him, she makes a surprise trip to England to visit him. His political upper crust lifestyle is nothing like Daphne's (Bynes) own, which consists of living in China Town with her hippie mom. Watch as Daphne grows up, learns a few lessons, clashes and blends cultures, deals with bratty future step-siblings, and falls in love. A cute movie that is enjoyable, to say the least.
