When Harry Met Sally | Year: 1989 Classification: Comedy Directed: - Rob Reiner Actors/Actresses: - Billy Crystal - Meg Ryan One of the brightest and best "When Harry Met Sally" is one of the brightest and best romantic comedies ever made. The story of the friendship between Harry and Sally crackles with wit and insight into the differences between men and women and the way those differences affect relationships, sex, and commitment. It is a tribute to the quality and realism of Nora Ephron's fine, funny script that we come to identify with and care so much about Harry (played by Billy Crystal), Sally (played by Meg Ryan), Marie (Sally's best friend played by Carrie Fisher), and Jess (Harry's best pal portrayed by Bruno Kirby). These are four urban upwardly mobile young people who excel in their professions but who are tentative in their relationships with the opposite sex. We follow these four characters over a decade as they grow as people and mature in their relationships. Rob Reiner's assured direction keeps the story moving along at a lively pace. There are no dull moments in this movie. And the gifted, urbane cast of Crystal, Ryan, Kirby, and Fisher are exceptionally good. These intriguing, facile actors bring exquisite charm, humor, pathos, and intelligence to their roles. It's an ideal cast. So as surely as Harry realizes that he's in love with Sally, you'll fall head over heels for "When Harry Met Sally". It's a perfect, perceptive marvel of romantic comedy. Meg and Billy are cute together I usually don't like Billy Crystal movies. He's a very two-dimensional actor. But I love Meg Ryan. And Rob Reiner really brings the best out of both of these characters. Not to mention a script by Nora Ephron, who would later cast Meg with Tom Hanks in both Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. I once had a relationship much like what's depicted in this movie, so that made it even more special for me. The way these two go through different stages of their development, the pacing of the whole film, it all felt very comfortable and very right. At no point do things feel hurried, nor do they drag, which is unusual for a film that takes place over time like this one does. If you are a fan of either of these actors, I definitely recommend getting this movie -- it's the best either of them has ever done. If for no other reason, there's the famous deli scene ("I'll have what she's having"). It's a classic. My favorite movie of all time! This movie is the perfect movie to make you laugh. I watch it every year somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love the scene where they pick out a Christmas tree. It draws you into New York the way Sex and the City does. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan were perfect for their roles--I've never liked either of them more than in this movie. Many great quotes came from this movie.
