Everyone will hack on you if you do not buy this DVD

Young Guns is definitely one of the best Westerns ever made. It is the story of how Billy the Kid and his legend was created. John Tunstall an English merchant takes in runaways and those on a downward spiral in life and in return for protecting his ranch from poachers gives them (his regulators) an education and board. After he is murdered by L.G. Murphy's men, Tunstall's regulators are deputised and set out to bring in those responsible. The Lincoln War is on and William H. Bony and the other regulators have prices on their heads. The Young Guns DVD also contains a featurette, which was made in 1988. It's kind of a behind the scenes, interview with the actors type thing. It's quite interesting and a flash back to 1988 with mentions of Tom's Cruise latest movie being Cocktail re-enforcing this was made in 1988. Seeing Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Keifer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Phillips over fifteen years younger than today and hearing them talk about their careers to that point is also rather interesting. I don't really like Westerns but I loved Young Guns. Check out the sequel Young Guns II as well.

What Goes Around, Comes Around

Young Guns 2 is what Unforgiven had tried to be: an anti-violence western. While lacking in the historical accuracy area, Young Guns made up for it in providing a well acted entertaining moral. Young Guns tells the story of William H. "Billy the Kid" Bonney and his gang of outlaws. They are wanted for their involvement in the Lincoln County Cattle Wars, which is historically accurate. The story does veer from reality in the personality of the Kid and his purposes for involvement. They make a romantic hero out of a murderer. Of course Hollywood has done this on a number of occasions (Mumia Abu Jamal). There really is a moralistic tale to this story: he who lives by the sword, will die by it also. The movie does make a statement as to the question of the Kid's death. Some claim that Pat Garrett didn't actually kill him, that he let him go and the Kid lived on for many years before 'revealing' himself to a newspaper reporter. I don't think that either side can be substantiated. This is definitely one of my favorite movies to catch whenever it's on tv. One of my favorite movie lines of all time comes from this movie. It's said when Kiefer Sutherland (Doc Scurlock) points a gun in Emilio Estevez's (Billy) face and says, "William H. Bonney, you are not a God." And the Kid replies, "Why don't cha pull the trigger an find out?"

Charming, entertaining and even better than the first one.

Young Guns is a movie about the origins of the legendary Billy The Kid and a handful of deputized outlaws that accompanied him in his adventures. Young Guns II is the great conclusion to Young Guns, so well realized that it outshines its predecessor. The story begins with the hunt for outlaws promoted by the newly elected governor of New Mexico with the help of handsome government rewards for the capture (dead or alive) of known personalities. Billy The Kid is one of the hunted and Pat Garret, his longtime friend, is made Sheriff to aid in his capture. The outcome of the story is legend. The cast's performances (Emilio Estevez, William Petersen, Diamond Lou-Phillips, Kiefer Sutherland, Christian Slater, Alan Ruck, Balthazar Getty, James Coburn and Viggo Mortensen) are wonderful and delightful to watch. The characters are very well developed and all of them shine in their own way. The score and soundtrack by Alan Silvestri and Jon Bon Jovi, along with the movie's photography, are breathtaking and work in concert to transport you to a long ago and far away place, making you feel part of the action. The sets and settings accurately depict the period; the showdowns and shot-outs abound, the surprise elements and unexpected plot twists are rewarding and the story is consistently woven into a fascinating tale based on one of the better known legends of the Old West. To enjoy this movie even more I would recommend watching Young Guns (part I) first, a very good movie too, you'll appreciate the character's growth and the pre-established, continued story lines a lot better. This is a must watch for those who like Westerns, like to wear their cowboy hats from time to time, or simply want to enjoy a good, entertaining, action-packed movie.
